Amazon stated that it would raise pay at its UK warehouses in response to strikes, but unions called the offer "an insult."

The American technology giant said on Wednesday that the minimum wage for warehouse workers in the United Kingdom will rise to between £11 and £12 per hour, depending on region. According to the GMB labour organisation, the boost is worth 50 pence per hour.

After a previous 50 pence-per-hour hike, the firm faced its first UK strikes in January at a warehouse in Coventry. Notwithstanding the new wage offer, it faces more industrial action.

Amazon said in January that it would close three of its UK warehouses this year, affecting around 1,200 employees, however the firm stated that it expects to establish two additional fulfilment facilities there, eventually employing 2,500 people.

"Our minimum wage has increased by 10% in the last seven months and by more than 37% since 2018." "We also work hard to provide good benefits, a happy work environment, and exceptional career possibilities," stated an Amazon spokeswoman in a statement.

Amazon also noted that the current compensation offer follows a one-time payout of up to £500 over Christmas.
