Putin Backs Ukraine Ceasefire but Calls for Resolution of ‘Root Causes’

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Thursday that Russia supports a U.S.-led ceasefire plan recently endorsed by Ukraine. However, he stressed that any agreement must address the underlying causes of the conflict to ensure long-term stability.

Putin’s Conditions for a Lasting Peace

During a press briefing, Putin acknowledged support for the ceasefire but insisted it must lead to “enduring peace” rather than a temporary halt in hostilities.

“We agree with the proposal for a ceasefire, to cease hostilities, but we proceed from the fact that this ceasefire should lead to an enduring peace and should remove the root causes of this crisis,” Putin stated, according to a live translation.

While open to discussions, Putin emphasized that certain “nuances” still need to be addressed before an agreement can be finalised.

U.S. Efforts and Diplomatic Negotiations

Putin also expressed gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump for prioritising negotiations on a potential Russia-Ukraine peace deal.

Meanwhile, U.S. diplomats are currently in Moscow for high-level talks regarding the proposed 30-day ceasefire agreement, which Kyiv has conditionally backed pending Russia’s approval.

What’s Next for the Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire?

With negotiations underway, global attention is focused on whether Russia and Ukraine can bridge their differences to reach a sustainable ceasefire. The outcome of these talks could shape the future of the ongoing conflict and broader geopolitical stability.
