In England, Scotland, and Wales, train drivers have agreed to a salary package that will put an end to over two years of strikes.
Members of the Aslef union agreed to an offer that comprised a backdated pay increase of 5% for 2022–2023; a pay increase of 4.75% for 23–24; and a pay increase of 4.5% for 24–25.
A dispute over wages and working conditions gave rise to the walkouts. Union leaders demanded more compensation for drivers, but the outgoing Conservative administration insisted that adjustments to working conditions be made first.
Since the start of the strikes in July 2022, there has been significant disruption on the trains due to industrial action.
Following the wage increases, the average income of a train driver has not been disclosed by the union or the government. The rail industry's trade association, the Rail Delivery Group, estimates that the average annual salary in 2023 will be £60,055.
Taking into account the recently declared wage hikes, the BBC has predicted that the average income in 2024–2025 will be around £69,000.
According to Aslef, the offer is backdated, compounded at 15%, pensionable, and covers drivers who retired or left the business during the disagreement.
With this achievement, the industrial action that saw drivers conduct eighteen strikes and participate in several overtime restrictions, resulting in service cancellations, comes to an end.
Several strikes, including ones that occurred during significant athletic and public events, nearly completely shut down English railway lines and certain cross-border services.
