Donald Trump has appointed two prominent entrepreneurs, Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, to head up a newly created “Department of Government Efficiency”. This advisory body will focus on slashing regulations, reducing bureaucratic red tape, and cutting government spending. The move aligns with Trump’s pledge to streamline government processes and bolster efficiency across various agencies.
Musk, who leads companies like Tesla, SpaceX, and X, took to social media to express enthusiasm, dismissing concerns over the initiative as a “Threat to democracy? Nope, threat to BUREAUCRACY!!!” Ramaswamy echoed Musk’s sentiment, pledging to work energetically with Trump’s team. The new department, named DOGE—an acronym that conveniently matches a cryptocurrency Musk has previously promoted—will operate alongside the Office of Management and Budget, with a timeline extending to July 4, 2026.
The scope of the department is broad, focusing on providing external “advice and guidance” to evaluate and restructure federal agencies, reduce regulations, and identify budget cuts. This appointment also reinforces Musk’s role as a key ally for Trump following the 2024 election, with Musk supporting Trump publicly during the campaign, rallying for him in key states, and financing a Super PAC in his favour. Musk has also suggested ambitious budget cuts, aiming to reduce the government’s $6.7 trillion budget significantly, with a particular focus on removing regulations that he argues could hamper his vision of space exploration.
In addition to Musk and Ramaswamy, Trump’s post-election appointments include Fox News host Pete Hegseth as defence secretary and former Texas congressman John Ratcliffe as CIA director. These choices are part of Trump’s strategy to shape a government less reliant on regulatory constraints, countering the policies enacted under outgoing President Biden.
Under the Biden administration, officials such as SEC chair Gary Gensler and FTC chair Lina Khan pushed for stricter regulations on climate, cybersecurity, and anti-competitive practices. However, the conservative-majority Supreme Court has recently limited the powers of federal agencies, making it easier for businesses to challenge regulatory actions.
With Musk and Ramaswamy at the helm, Trump’s government efficiency initiative aims to reimagine federal operations, reduce spending, and simplify regulatory procedures, setting a new tone for Trump’s return to the White House.
