Trump to Speak with Putin on Tuesday Amid Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire Talks

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday as part of efforts to mediate a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump hinted at a major update regarding the ongoing ceasefire negotiations, stating he would have “something to announce” by Tuesday. He also revealed that discussions are centred around territorial agreements and control over key power plants.

The President further mentioned that there have been preliminary discussions about the division of certain assets between Russia and Ukraine.

Trump-Putin Talks Follow U.S.-Led Ceasefire Negotiations

Trump’s upcoming conversation with Putin comes after White House officials confirmed that the administration is pushing for direct dialogue with the Kremlin this week. This follows Ukraine’s recent acceptance of a tentative ceasefire deal brokered by the U.S. during talks in Saudi Arabia. While the full details remain unclear, reports suggest that Kyiv has agreed to a mineral supply arrangement with Washington.

However, tensions remain high, especially after a heated White House meeting earlier this month between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. During the encounter, Trump referred to Zelensky as a “dictator,” raising concerns that any U.S.-negotiated peace deal may include concessions that favour Russia.

Ceasefire Prospects Amid Military Aid Freeze

Despite the ongoing negotiations, uncertainty looms over Ukraine’s ability to sustain its defence. The U.S. recently suspended all military aid to Kyiv, a decision that could weaken Ukraine’s position in the prolonged conflict and accelerate pressure to finalise a ceasefire agreement.

While Zelensky has indicated openness to a peace deal, Russian officials have expressed "cautious optimism" about the potential for a resolution.

With the Trump-Putin talks set for Tuesday, global attention remains on whether this high-stakes dialogue will bring a breakthrough in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
